The U.S. President Donald Trump is facing backlash online after sharing an image depicting himself dressed in papal attire, sparking criticism from religious groups, political opponents, and social media users.
The controversial image, which appears to be digitally generated using artificial intelligence, shows Trump in white papal robes and a mitre, mimicking the traditional attire of the Pope.
Trump posted the image on his social media platform, Truth Social, along with a caption that read, "Only one can lead with divine strength."
Critics were quick to condemn the post, calling it disrespectful, blasphemous, and narcissistic. Several Catholic leaders expressed concern over what they described as the “politicization of religious imagery.”
“This is not just satire. It's a deeply offensive portrayal that trivializes the sacred office of the papacy,” said Father Michael O’Connell of the Archdiocese of New York.
Social media platforms erupted with reactions, with the hashtag #PopeTrump trending within hours. Some users accused Trump of delusions of grandeur, while others defended the post as harmless satire.
