Abu Dhabi, April 12, 2025 — In a bold move to reshape urban life in one of the world’s hottest climates, Abu Dhabi has officially launched its first-ever fully air-conditioned outdoor pedestrian walkway. The innovative project, spearheaded by the Department of Municipalities and Transport, aims to provide residents and tourists with a comfortable and enjoyable walking experience all year round — even during the sweltering peak of summer.
Located in the Al Nahyan area, near the Al Mamoura building, the cutting-edge walkway is designed to maintain a consistent temperature of 24°C regardless of the extreme outdoor heat. This feat is achieved through the integration of state-of-the-art cooling systems, which are discreetly built into the structure to ensure seamless operation and comfort.
The walkway stretches through a vibrant urban section of the city and features a blend of convenience and leisure. Along the route, pedestrians will find a variety of retail outlets, cafés, and shaded seating areas — all within the cooled enclosure. It is open to the public year-round, offering a unique space that encourages walking and social interaction, even during the most intense summer months.
One of the most striking aspects of the walkway is its design. Engineers and architects have created a structure that allows natural sunlight to filter in while keeping the internal environment cool. This architectural innovation offers a bright, inviting atmosphere without compromising on temperature control. The transparent canopy not only contributes to energy efficiency but also enhances the overall walking experience by creating a connection with the outdoors.
In addition to temperature regulation, the walkway has been equipped with high-performance soundproofing materials along its walls. These materials work to significantly reduce ambient noise from the surrounding city, offering a peaceful retreat for pedestrians right in the heart of Abu Dhabi.
City officials say the project is part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable urban development and improve the quality of life in the emirate. “This is more than just a cooling solution,” said a spokesperson from the Department of Municipalities and Transport. “It is a step toward reimagining how we live, move, and interact in cities with extreme climates. We’re providing not only comfort but also accessibility and community space.”
The success of this pilot walkway could pave the way for similar developments in other parts of the city and possibly across the UAE, where innovation in urban planning is increasingly seen as key to adapting to climate challenges.
As temperatures in the Gulf region continue to rise due to climate change, Abu Dhabi’s air-conditioned pedestrian path may serve as a blueprint for the future of walkable urban spaces in hot-weather cities around the world.
