South Korean Court Overturns Arrest Warrant for Impeached President Yoon
A South Korean court has canceled the arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, paving the way for his possible release from jail after his controversial martial law declaration.
Yoon, detained since mid-January on insurrection charges, argued that the arrest warrant was illegal. The Seoul Central District Court ruled in his favor, stating the indictment was filed after his detention period had expired and calling for its cancellation to ensure procedural clarity.
Legal Battle Continues
Despite the ruling, Yoon may not be released immediately. His lawyer, Seok Dong-hyeon, explained that prosecutors could appeal the decision, which would prolong his detention. Meanwhile, the opposition Democratic Party has urged prosecutors to challenge the ruling to uphold justice.
A Tumultuous Presidency
Yoon declared martial law on December 3, citing threats from "anti-state" elements. However, he lifted the decree just six hours later after parliament rejected it. The opposition-led legislature later impeached him, accusing him of violating his constitutional duty.
Now, the Constitutional Court must decide whether to remove him from office permanently or reinstate him. If his impeachment is upheld, South Korea will hold a new presidential election within two months.
