Early Life and Education

Yoon Suk-yeol was born on December 18, 1960, in Seoul, South Korea. He grew up in a well-educated family—his father, Yoon Ki-joong, was a professor of statistics at Yonsei University, and his mother was also an educator.

Yoon attended Seoul National University (SNU), where he studied law. Despite struggling to pass the Korean bar exam initially, he persisted and eventually succeeded, launching his career in law and prosecution.

Legal and Prosecutorial Career

Yoon became a public prosecutor in the early 1990s and quickly gained a reputation for his anti-corruption investigations. Some key moments in his legal career include:

  • Leading the prosecution of former President Park Geun-hye’s aides in the corruption scandal that led to her impeachment (2017).

  • Investigating major corporations and government officials for bribery and abuse of power.

  • Serving as Prosecutor General of South Korea (2019–2021), where he clashed with the Moon Jae-in administration over judicial independence.

Political Career and Presidency

In 2021, Yoon resigned as Prosecutor General and entered politics. He joined the conservative People Power Party (PPP) and ran in the 2022 South Korean presidential election.

In a highly competitive race, Yoon won the presidency on March 9, 2022, defeating Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party. He officially took office on May 10, 2022.

As president, Yoon has focused on:

Yoon is married to Kim Keon-hee, a businesswoman and art curator. They do not have children.
