Former President John Mahama has called on African countries to reposition themselves to take full advantage of the evolving landscape of global geopolitics and trade. Speaking at the 2025 Kwahu Business Forum on Friday, April 19, he emphasized the urgent need for the continent to shift from a trade-dominated mindset to one centered on industrialization and entrepreneurship.
Mahama noted that Africa has historically missed out on the economic gains that accompanied major global transformations—from the Cold War to the era of globalization.
However, he believes the current wave of geopolitical realignments, including intensifying trade wars among major world economies, presents a new opportunity for the continent.
“The world is changing, and new opportunities are emerging. As a nation, we must seize them,” he stated.
Referring to ongoing trade tensions among global economic giants, Mahama explained that these are driving significant shifts in global production patterns—shifts that Africa must capitalize on to move beyond its traditionally passive economic role.
“Africa must break free from the idea that we are merely traders,” he asserted. “We need to boldly embrace manufacturing, industrialization, digital innovation, and agribusiness.”
He added, “We can be anything we choose to be.”
Mahama concluded by saying that in an increasingly unpredictable world, shaped by political and economic uncertainties, Africa has a renewed chance to step forward and play a more assertive role in the global economy.
